Here is a story I wrote for my Language Arts class. Here we were also learning about different types of sentences, so you will find a variety of sentences. I also was using a lot of different substitutes for the bland word "said". I had a lot of fun writing this story and adding a little humor in it. I added a lot of the skills and techniques that I learned over the quarter. Enjoy!
tu quoque brutus
I step out of the dark tunnel into the arena. The sunlight blinded me temporarily as it hit my face. The cheering of the crowd brings me more fear. I’m a finalist in the gladiator games. I had won every other fight I had and this was the finals. One of us was not going to come out of the arena alive, I don’t want that to be me.
And no, I am not in a box seat watching the games I’m in it. I started out as a king, King Cassius to be exact. I lived the high life. Never hungry, never helpless, and definitely never poor. How did I get here you ask. It’s quite the story.
➴➴➴➴➴➴➴➴➴➴➴➴➴➴➴➴➴➴➴➴➴➴➴➴➴➴➴➴➴➴➴➴➴➴➴➴➴➴➴➴➴➴➴
I step out onto my balcony in the morning sun. What a nice day I think to myself. My slaves come into my room bustling around to arrange for me to be bathed. Aroma filled the bathing room while my slaves fed me grapes. When I had finished bathing I had my toga put on. After the slaves had pinned the last pin on my toga the horns blared announcing my arrival. “King Cassius of Rome!” one of my workers boomed as I entered the dining hall.
“Today’s food is cheese and bread or fruit platters,” my dining slave proclaimed.
“Fetch me the cheese and bread,” I answered. As the slave waddles off to the kitchen my beloved sister, Camilla, saunters in. Her shimmering, golden armbands catch the morning light, her white gown flowing in the breeze as she gracefully floats over toward me; her caramel colored ringlet curls rest on her shoulders perfectly contrasting her green eyes. Yup, that’s my sister, I think to myself. Every man in the kingdom (besides me) wants to marry her, it’s disgusting.
“Today is tax collection day and all of the civilians are complaining to me about how they don’t have enough money. What are you gonna do, huh, Mr.King. Don’t just look at me, DO SOMETHING!”my sister, Camilla, screamed with rage, “Why don’t you go talk to them? Why don’t you come up with a solution? Why don’t you make them pay less? WHY DON’T YOU DO ANYTHING?!” Wow does she have a temper, I think to myself.
“Geez, Camilla, is that a way to greet the emperor in the morning?” I reply calmly.
“Ugh, I can’t believe you’re the dofus running this place. If this is where Rome is headed, I don’t want to be there for it.” Camilla rambled. Now that got me, I jumped out of my chair and got right up in her face. “Fine, we’ll leave the castle today and collect the taxes ourselves and receive the complaints. See if I care,” I hiss at her.

After breakfast Camilla and I mount our horses and ride into the village with a few guards. As we approached the village the commoners began booing and throwing whatever item was easily accessible. A pair of underwear landed on me, but Camilla was not as fortunate. Someone had launched a loose piece of cement and it hit her on the arm. This was intolerable, I couldn’t believe what they were doing. They began bringing clubs and swords out from their homes. I unsheathed my sword ready for attack commanding the guards to do so as well. From there it was a blur, I let my instincts take over. Killing one rebel after the other. Until, everything went black.
I woke up on the streets, my horse had abandoned me along with Camilla’s horse. It is a pitch black night all except the large full moon. I shook Camilla to wake her up. “Where are we,” Camilla questioned groggily.
“We’re still in the village,” I answer looking around for our guards, “let’s get back to the palace and then I can deal with those lousy guards.” Camilla winced in pain as she tried to get up of the floor using her arms.
“Don’t get up, I’ll carry you,” I told her. She nodded and helped me get her on my back. We walked back to the castle silently. In my head I was thinking of how I was going to punish the guards that abandoned us.

We finally were a few paces away from the palace after what felt like forever. I’m climbing up the last few steps to the gate when I hear distant laughing. As we get closer I hear, “...and when he finds out he’s gonna be like ‘tu quoque brutus’ just like the last emperor.” That was weird. I thought it was nothing but as I approached the front gate I began to panic. What do they mean, why are they saying this?
“Were you talking about me?” I question in my most noble voice. They crack up at that and I wasn’t even trying to be funny.
One of them reply, “You have been replaced.”
“WHAT!” I raged. One of the higher ranked senators rushed down to the gates.
“The council has voted you off and there has been a man whom has paid to replace you.” he echoed. My chest felt heavy, I felt as if a stampede of horses had ran over me. I didn’t know what to say. “Lock the front gates to keep the peasants out,” commanded the senate with a smug distasteful look on his face.
I wandered over to a bush a few meters from the castle and placed Camilla on the ground. She had slept through all of it. I wondered what I would tell her when she woke up. My eyelids soon became heavy I lay on a pile of leaves and fell asleep.

I awoke to the sounds of the morning buzz of the village. What a terrible dream, I thought to myself. Then I open my eyes and realize I’m actually sleeping next to a bush. A few minutes later Camilla wakes up. “Where are we? Why am I constantly asking this question? What happened anyway?” she groaned with agitation.
“I really don’t know what happened or why it happened, but what I do know is that I’m not… I’m,” I sigh, “not king.”
“Wait, what?” Camilla whispers, “This can’t be happening.”
“Well you better believe it.”
“This is a dream, pinch me.” Camilla responds
“No, Camilla, this is real.” I consoled, “Come on let’s go to the village to see if we can get some food.” She nods and I help her up with her good arm.
As we walk to town Camilla began about her bad arm, “The bad arm is going to weigh us down in the long run. Maybe you should just leave me here.”
“No, and leave you behind, I would never think of it” I say. She smiles one of her “all of the boys within ten years of her age faint” smiles.

We began begging for food as soon as we arrived in the village, just to find everyone was out of food as well. For a good hour we asked every person in the entire place until-- we heard hoofbeats in the distance. “Barbarians are attacking find a spot to hide!” hollers one of the older men. Everyone scrambled around uncapping barrels and shoveling their children in. Opening sewer entrances and climbing in. Everyone had their own spot except us. We began to see them, first their glinting swords, then the spears.
A kind man motions for us to climb up his house to a hiding spot. I run over to him forgetting that Camilla couldn’t climb with her bad arm. “GO! Go without me!” Camilla yells over the thundering hoofbeats.
“No we’ll stick together! I won’t let you go!” I bello with tears watering up my eyes. I grab her and throw her over my back in one swift movement and run towards the man. I began griping the pipes to scramble up the house. When we were about to reach the top Camilla slipped off my back. She fell to the floor just as the barbarians passed. She disappeared into the flurry of horses, barbarians, and the villagers without a spot to hide.
I had just lost my only reason to live to a bunch of hooligans. I lost my life, my fortune, and my family. I cry to myself considering just falling off as well, but no, that would not be what Camilla wanted. I hoisted myself up on to the roof and followed the man into a crevice in the roof. I found myself in a small room with a tiny window. From there I could see the barbarians raiding people's homes and killing all in their way.
➴➴➴➴➴➴➴➴➴➴➴➴➴➴➴➴➴➴➴➴➴➴➴➴➴➴➴➴➴➴➴➴➴➴➴➴➴➴➴➴➴➴➴
About and hour later when all of the barbarians had disappeared people began coming out of hiding. “So here are your options,” the man cracked, “you become my slave because I saved your life, or you die.”
“I would rather die,” I respond honestly.
“Well sadly for you, I need a slave more that a blood stain in my carpet.” the man croaks. He motions me to follow him. I had nothing better to do so I did.
He scales down the house surprisingly well for his older age. He walks into his home to announce to his family, “We have a slave!” The house erupted into cheer. That was reassuring. The lady of the home showed me to a spot on the floor where I would sleep. They tied me to a pole in their home to prevent me escaping. I had nothing better to do, so hanging out at a random person’s home and getting a meal a day wasn’t a such a terrible thing.
I woke up the next day to a loud banging. The woman was smashing two pots together to wake me up. I rised sleepily and waited for her to untie me. I then went outside as commanded and began doing some work.
My job was to weave baskets for the man’s stand in the weekly market. Didn’t seem too hard. Let me be the first to tell you, it was hard. The man began to teach me. “Over, under, through, pull, loop, and repeat,” he would mumble every time I got it wrong. What is over, under, through, pull, loop, and repeat supposed to mean? By the end of the day my hands were blistered and red from the twine. I would eat my one meal of the day then go to bed again. This went on for months the same thing. Wake up, work, eat, sleep. Again and again and again and again, until one day a man on a horse came by advertizing this new building, the Colosseum.
That night I overheard the man talking to the woman. “We could sell him, make lots of money and be in good shape,” says the man.
“But we need him for the baskets,” the lady adds.
Then the man calculates, “If we sell him though, then we will have enough money to quit the market job with the baskets.”
“Fine.”agrees the lady. I fell asleep that night wondering what they meant. Sell him? Make lots of money?

The next morning I was alarmed to hear, that in fact they were selling me! To the gladiator games! I would be killing others just so I wouldn’t die. Sounds risky, but what other choice do I got? I got tied to a bunch of other slaves that got sold to this “gladiator games” business and we were marched to the Colosseum.
When we got there we were assigned a spot in the Colosseum to sleep. We were put to work right after. Me and a few others were given orders to clean the seats where the spectators sit. They gave us a metal bristle brush and a cleaning oil. After the first few seats, I became pretty fast at it. We scrubbed and scrubbed for hours, until it became dark. Then we were given some sort of mush and sent off to our assigned sleeping arrangements.
The next morning the games began. I watched a few before it was my turn. I did not want to be the dead one in my fight. This is when my fighting skills I learned in the castle would come in handy.Although it has been months since I have practiced, I think I can still muster a few skills. For the next few games I participated in I had won. Small crowds would start to show up for my fights. People began placing bets on me to win.

He turns around very slowly and swings with his weapon wildly just to strike the ground a meter away from me. The crowd roared with laughter. All this did was make him mad. He started being reckless, swatting and swinging at me with no luck. As he crouched to take one huge wallop at me I jumped onto his shoulders and batted at his head with my club vigorously until he fell to the ground. I had won the gladiator games! I really like this piece of work, it really shows creativity I think. My favorite line in the article is "It may cast a spell on you that is permanent. It prefers the wiggle legs, the potbelly, loopy, and sudden urge to dance the salsa spells." I really like this line because I can just imagine people doing each of these things. :) This is a combo of all of my favorite mythical creatures and their powers. I also really like how I got to mash pictures together to make the character. It was really fun to see how great it turned out. Enjoy!
What I learned during my research for the Walls Essay Exam was that walls can be good or bad. Some walls like the Vietnam Veterans Memorial are meant to do good. It is just meant to honor those who have died serving in the war. While other walls like the US, Mexico Boarder Wall has the purpose to separate people and has only caused issues. All this wall had done in the end was manage to pull two countries relationship apart.
Some things that I learned about Nicolaus Copernicus when I was researching for my biography was that before Copernicus people of the Renaissance era thought that the earth was the center of the universe. People thought this because the church told them this and the high ranking church people were the only ones that could read. Nicolaus Copernicus's theory stated that the sun was the center of the universe with all other celestial bodies orbiting around it. Copernicus didn't even share his discovery until he was on his deathbed because he was fearful of what the church would do. Nicolaus Copernicus made a huge breakthrough in science and I'm glad that I got to learn about it.
